1920's in Australia
The 1920’s in Australia was known as the jazz era, the end of the war brought a period of optimism and progress for man Australians. The 1920’s was the decade of entertainment, there was the first radio broadcast, the first form of television and the first talking movie. New inventions like the radio and automobiles became common possessions for an ordinary family and going to the cinema was a popular form of entertainment. The 1920’s was also the decade of new innovation, like the car revolution, in 1928 national motor vehicle registrations topped at 500 000, however this also brought over 1000 deaths caused by road accidents. Due to these circumstances, Australia had to enforce new road rules and speed limits. There were some major breakthroughs in medicine and science, penicillin was discovered and insulin for diabetics was now available. As well as penicillin and insulin the AIM now known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service was developed during the 1920’s, their first flight in 1928.
Women in the 1920’s had more freedom and found work outside the home. This decade brought a new set of social values, women turned to fashion to express themselves. Hems of skirts went up to knees, women cut their hair short, smoked, danced, drank alcohol, swore, wore make up and went out in public by themselves. Some women would even go to the beach in “revealing” swimsuits. These women were known as “flappers”. Not all Australians, mostly the older generation did not agree with this change in attitude and considered it sinful, these people were known as “wowsers”.
In October 1929, the world experienced a stock market crash on Wall Street New York that plunged the world into the Great Depression that lasted for more than 10 years.
